Armenian History Month

The month of April is known to be Armenian History Month. The significance of April 24th in particular marks one of the most important and devastating days of the Armenian Genocide. It is crucial to bring awareness to the fact that over 1.5 million Armenians were massacred in 1915. As a proud Armenian, my heart aches for my culture year after year as I too have had ancestors who were put through this atrocious time.

In honor of this month I would like to reflect on the positives of what my homeland has offered and that is its’ beautiful architecture. Armenia is known for its beautiful medieval churches in particular. Some even say that their style is what inspired other church buildings. A few of my favorite historical pieces in Armenia is the Zvartnots Cathedral, where its remains can be visited till today although it was built back in the 7th century during a very chaotic time. Another one of my favorites is the Saint Gayane Church with its three-nave domed basilica that has not changed its design since it was built back in 630. I also love the Cathedral of Ani as it is the largest standing building in Ani, city of 1,001 churches.

There are many different architectural characteristics that Armenia’s churches carry. One of the biggest features are the pointed domes that resonate with the Great Mount Ararat. They portray tall narrow windows, tall structural arches, and roofs intersecting to support the domes. After centuries of Armenian land being taken from them there is very few of what remains. Many historic landmarks have been destroyed throughout the years and it is extremely unfortunate to see what used to be. In the midst of its chaos there are still great pieces that remain. My current favorite form of modern architecture lies at the Yerevan Cascade Complex.

We want to embrace the beauty of the Armenian culture and its alluring architecture and make sure we preserve the history of Armenia and make sure it stays alive for the years to come. I hope that one day you too will be able to visit the beautiful land of Armenia and see its beautiful landmark for yourself.
