Mix and Match: The Art of Textures in Interior Design

Interior design has an unmatched artistry. It is something so personal and yet almost has no wrong answer. One of our favorite things about it at Nazeli Design is the ability to mix and match different textures. It is something that sets apart a scene in any space that not many people consider. It is the touch of a designer. 

Almost everything you source has a specific texture to it. When navigating wallpaper there are grass cloth options, silk options, and many more. That is just the beginning of it. Even when picking out a natural stone there are different textures to pick from. For example, when picking travertine or limestone for a space you can at times feel the rigidness of it. Once you have decided on your stone there are also different finish options to choose from as well such as honed or polished.

Wallcoverings aren't the only thing that’s textured because you have the option of textured paint too. There is roman clay, lime wash, and venetian plaster. Although all three are fairly similar it is a designer who is able to differentiate them. Their movements are entirely different and the brush strokes matter in determining it. Roman clay has more of an earthy texture whereas lime wash has a more chalky texture. When it comes to surfaces you have options again. There are wood grain surfaces or metallic options. You can include these in various areas throughout your home and it will just elevate it.

Fabrics are texture galore. There is mohair, velvet, boucle, leather etc. Certain elements have natural woven textures you might even consider. This isn't even just for a sofa, you can customize it to your liking and preferences. Throw in a woven rug with a velvet sofa and a boucle armchair and you have a designer inspired space. Customize your drapery to velvet or linen and again you have created something unique to your home.
