Interior Design MIstakes to avoid

In the world of interior design there are many common mistakes we see that can easily be avoided. You might not catch it on your own or even realize you should avoid something until a designer points it out to you. Nazeli Design is here to help you with some of the common mistakes we see happen.

The number one mistake we notice as designers is when clients want to furnish their space with furniture from only one brand or store. As our principal designer says, “it is not a showroom.” When you only buy furniture from RH for your living room then it’s going to look like the RH showroom and this is the first indicator that you in fact did not hire a designer. The trick is to mix and match decor and furniture to create flow yet unity by utilizing different textures and patterns together.

Another common mistake we see is people being afraid of incorporating color and painting their walls in a flat white. Yes, a white is classic and elegant but sometimes the wrong use of it makes a space look like an operating room and we definitely don't want that. There are also different finish options and different shades of white that can enhance the room. Along with white walls the undertones of your lighting can also create an unflattering space such as not choosing the right temperature for it and mixing up where you need to use warm toned lighting versus cool toned.

We see a lot of spaces where someone has picked the right artwork or a great rug but because their scale and proportion is off they did not achieve what they were going for and can’t put their finger on what it is that the room is missing. Not using scale to your advantage will always make the room feel like it is just not finished so make sure to measure. Imagine a beautiful living room with a great furniture selection but a rug that is just way too big swallowing the space or a rug way too small making it look incomplete with stark white walls and cool undertone lighting along a big accent wall with small artwork not hanging high enough. That room will never feel like a home.

You have to also make sure to never neglect your personal style and to not just stick to things that are too trendy. Trends are just that, they will soon go out of style and you have just wasted your time and money. You can always avoid these mistakes by hiring a designer or at least consulting with one to make sure you are headed in the right direction.
