minimalist vs. maximalist design
The constant battle between minimalist versus maximalist interior design and which direction to go in. Nazeli Design is here to help you determine whether you are a minimalist or a maximist. We support you either way because the struggle of deciding is real.
For some it’s easy, they are minimalist. They don’t like clutter and they don’t like anything on countertops. Then there are some who want to utilize every inch of a space and don’t mind multiple pieces of decor and furniture. Differentiating between these two design concepts is fairly simple. In minimalistic design your sole focus is functionality while applying mute and neutral tones typically. The color palette you go with determines a lot. Going with creams and light grays as your dominant color with accent pieces of possibly black is where you excel in this design. It also consists of open floor plans and natural lighting.
Texture also plays a huge role in determining a design factor. Minimalists tend to go for not just earthy tones but textures and materials too. Linens, wools, woods, metals, and stones. A maximalist might opt for something with heavy veining when selecting countertops but a minimalist will go for something warm and subtle like travertine. They would also go with unique shapes and designs for their furniture. Minimalists make noise in their design but in a way a maximalist does not.
Those that are maximalists tend to be chaotic and electric. The more the merrier for them. They tend to lean into bold colors and patterns. They also love to layer textures and aren't usually opposed to taking risks. They might have a boucle sofa, with velvet pillows and silk curtains and somehow they make it work. A minimalist might go for a subtle wallcovering choice from Phillip Jeffries on just one wall but a maximalist will take a powder room and wallcover it entirely with something patterned and fun from de Gournay. The advantage to them however is that they can mix designs from different eras and styles and turn it into something you'd want to see in Architectural Digest. Their sense of accessorizing is also interesting ranging from intricate sculptures to creative artwork. They also create very inviting and intimate spaces for those around them to enjoy.
We can’t say one design is better than the other because the beauty of interior design is for the most part your perspective and taste, there are no wrong answers. This however does not mean you should go in and mix a bunch of items together, hire a designer instead for guidance.
